Lana Wachowski is a well known science-fiction/fantasy writer, producer and director and an activist for transgender rights. Since she was young Lana (formerly Larry) struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts caused by social stigmas. She spent much of her time with her brother, Andrew (Now Lilly). They were both interested in the science-fiction/fantasy genre, they often read comic books, and were seen playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons. They even created their own role-play game in high school called “High Adventure”, that was never copyrighted. Now they often write, produce, and direct films together. Almost all their films were a duet from the two, movies like The Matrix and Cloud Atlas. Lilly came out as transgender March of 2016 only enforcing Lana’s beliefs about transgender rights. Her efforts awarded her with the HRC Visibility award, where her acceptance speech was the most the media had ever heard from either of the Wachowskis. During trailers and interviews for her 2012 film Cloud Atlas, is when we started to hear more from Lana including her coming out as transgender. Known as a very reclusive writer/director, Lana prefers to work with the same movie crew for all her films. The only other person Lana is close with is her wife Karin Winslow, married since 2009. The Wachowskis are well known for V for Vendetta, Speed Racer, The Matrix, and Jupiter Ascending are all science-fiction/Fantasy movies, that showcase their love and own personal signature on a genre. A few of Lana’s inspirations are other directors/producers such as Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston, George Lucas, and Stanley Kubrick. Lana continues to advocate for transgender rights and produce science-fiction in her newest production, Sense 8, a Netflix exclusive that follows people from different parts of the world with supernatural powers. Her series proves her versatility, not only can she write, direct, and produce full length films she can also do TV series. It doesn’t stop there she’s also worked with her brother to make The Matrix video games, and comic books such as Ectokid. Even though very solitary Lana Wachowski is the first major Hollywood director to come out as transgender and advocate for transgender rights through her films.
