June 21st, 1965 Laurence Wachowski was born in Chicago, Illinois. A few years later her best friend and brother Andrew was born in 1967. She grew up in a neighborhood surrounded by social stigmas and prejudice. Larry (now Lana) was bullied for being different, and suffered from severe depression accompanied by suicidal thoughts. Her childhood and teenage years were spent playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons, and reading science fiction comic books with her brother. She attended Bard College, A liberal arts college, for a short time, until dropping out to become a carpenter with her brother. Awhile later they began writing their own comic for marvel called “Ectokid”. Shortly after they directed their first film Assassins, which Lana said was “totally rewritten” and tried unsuccessfully to remove their name from the credits. The Wachowski’s made a name for themselves in their 1999 CGI hit The Matrix. Quickly following the blockbuster were sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, they didn’t do as well as the original movie. In later years these films were also adapted into video games which the wachowski’s helped produce. Lana’s next hit was the screenplay she adapted from the graphic novel of V for Vendetta in 2005. To show that they can work on different projects the Wachowski’s directed a manga series revamp Speed Racer in 2006. You might say Speed Racer was the turning point in Lana’s life. The next year she married her current wife Karin Winslow. Around 2010 is when Lana’s gender transition became known to the media through trailers, and interviews for her upcoming film Cloud Atlas. Lana, her brother Andy (Now Lily), and Tom Tywker all teamed up for the complex fantasy created in Cloud Atlas. They all wrote, produced and directed the film. Following her coming out as transgender Lana recieved the HRC visibility award in 2012. Her acceptance speech was her first direct contact with the media ever. In 2015 they wrote, produced and directed, the action packed visually stunning, Jupiter Ascending. Another leap for her career she is producing and directing her own Netflix series Sense8. March of 2016 Lana’s brother, Andy, also came out as transgender reinforcing Lana’s stance of transgender rights.
