Transgender RightsBeing a very solitary person, finding detailed information and history on Lana was a challenge. This means finding really details about problems in her life was difficult. I forced myself to kind of squint and see the obvious. Throughout her life Lana was affected by social stigmas against her gender fluidity. This caused Laurence (at the time) to fall into a deep depression, even bringing up suicidal thoughts. In her acceptance speech for the HRC visibility award she even admits to planning a date to commit suicide. Obviously Lana isn’t the only one that has been bullied for being different but this caused her to come up with a solution. Around 2010 Larry received gender transition surgery/therapy. Laurence could no longer be made fun of for acting like a girl, because he became one. Also all the bullying made her speak out for the rights of other transgenders and support them by featuring LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) persons in her films and TV shows. Just this year Lana’s sibling Lily (formerly Andy) went through the same process of getting a gender change. This has only strengthened Lana’s stance on transgender rights.

Trouble in the film industry
A problem many people in the film industry encounter is discreditation. This happened in the Wachowski’s, Lana and Lily, very first film Assassins. A 1995 film starring Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas about, you guessed it, a paid assassin trying to kill someone. The Wachowski’s claim the film was “terribly rewritten” by Brian Helgeland, a co-writer. It’s not always easy to remove your name from a piece of history like a film with big headline actors. Lana and Lily tried multiple times to remove their names from the film, but failed. This all happened in an attempt to save the duo’s reputation in the film industry. Now it’s only a minor blip in an impressive career of talented auteurs.
