Laverne Cox is a well-known transgender actress from the Netflix original series Orange Is The New Black. She was born in Mobile, Alabama a state where a gender swap is a complicated process. You have to go to court to have your name, driver's license, and gender on your birth certificate changed. Most people don’t know she’s also a wonderful dancer, feminist, and activist for transgender rights, just as Lana Wachowski is. The major difference between the two is, Mrs. Cox’s media coverage. Because of her role in the hit show, Orange Is The New Black, Laverne receives much more attention from the media. This includes more interviews and chances to express her beliefs surrounding transgender and female rights. Lana could’ve received many of these same opportunities, if not for being so reclusive and solitary. They both attended a university of some kind, but Laverne finished her education with a BFA in dance. Now they both work in the film industry on different sides of the camera, although Cox has experience as a producer as well. An important person in Lana’s life is her sister, as they often work together on projects. Laverne is also close with her twin brother, they actually played the same character before/after a sex change in OITNB. Usually activists have very strong beliefs because they went through experiences that have made them look at what is wrong with the world, and they see they need to help fix it. Lana and Laverne both were bullied and harassed for being different, sending them into depression. This inspires them to make noise about the issues surrounding transgenders and the harassment that goes with being different. The two Gemini’s have been received in different ways, while Lana goes by unnoticed for her work, Laverne was nominated for an Emmy and is frequently found on the cover of magazines. She is known to be very open and expressive about her experience as a transgender. Laverne and Lana have two wildly different personalities, they are both transgender women fighting for their cause in different ways. Both making efforts to see a change in society.
